The Future of LCHS, Inc…

Dear friends and supporters of LCHS, Inc.,

In the Fall of 2023, the Leavenworth County Humane Society was just a few expenses away from shutting down. While the Board of Directors did their absolute best each day, there were only three on the team, and the amazing LCHS Inc. staff was overworked and overwhelmed. We knew there needed to be a change. In January 2024, LCHS had a day-long strategic planning meeting to determine how to remain open. Our Board of Directors grew. Our staff worked harder than ever before. Then, in April, we formed a Fundraising Committee that hosted at least one monthly event. Before we knew it, 2024 was over, and we had once again saved hundreds of cats and dogs.

It is no secret that there were times last year when our future looked bleak. Thanks to community generosity, we could always scrape funds together for another day. However, we currently find ourselves in a similar, though not identical, situation. Our Board is stronger than ever before, and we have so many extraordinary individuals, staff and volunteers alike, who give time and money to saving the lives of homeless dogs and cats. Unfortunately, like many other shelters nationwide, the continued financial burden and strain on resources have led to a difficult decision.

Currently, the Leavenworth County Humane Society plans to cease operations on March 31st, 2025. Due to our scaling down of operations, we will no longer be accepting animals unless they come through employees from the cities of Lansing or Basehor. We will continue to be open for adoptions, and we will continue all fundraisers and raffles we have planned through the end of March–we still need to take care of business. If you were planning on coming to a fundraiser, still come! If you were planning on donating, please continue your generosity! We will continue to provide the best possible care to all animals in our shelter. Animals in our care by March 31st will continue to be loved and protected by our team until they are adopted or transferred to another facility.

We cannot thank our community enough–you have kept us open beyond what we thought possible for many years. Please continue that momentum until the end, as we will have loose ends to tie up. We are grateful for all the love and support. Please stop by during our open hours to see if you can find your fur-ever friend!
